Constant. This word has been heavy on my heart lately. The dictionary defines constant as something that remains the same over time—unwavering, faithful, and unchanging despite circumstances. When I read this, I immediately thought to myself, What a perfect word to describe God’s heart and character. Scripture reveals this truth from beginning to end. God is not influenced by circumstances. He is not moved by the abilities or inabilities of man, nor is He shaken by the instability of this world. He is steadfast, faithful, and unchanging. This is why the prophet Malachi described the heart of the Lord with these words:
“For I, the LORD, do not change; therefore you, the sons of Jacob, have not come to an end” (Malachi 3:6 NASB).
Living in an Inconsistent World
Over the past few years, as we have watched the unfolding of wars, uncertainties, and various forms of division all around us, I have been reminded of a simple but profound truth: God is constant. Biblically speaking, the consistency of God refers to His character, His heart, His promises, and His Word. God never changes. His love remains. His promises remain. His faithfulness remains. What He was yesterday, He is today, and He will be forever. James writes that every good gift comes from the Father, “with whom there is no variableness, neither shadow of turning” (James 1:17). Likewise, the psalmist declares:
“But You are the same, and Your years will have no end” (Psalm 102:27).
In a world where almost everything changes, God alone is truly constant. Living in Israel during such turbulent times has given me a front-row seat to both the fragility of this world and the faithfulness of God. I am reminded that so much of life can change in an instant. Circumstances change. Nations change. Leaders change. People change. But God does not.
When everything around us feels unstable, He remains constant. When fear threatens to overwhelm us, He remains constant. When the future feels uncertain, He remains constant. The world we live in is anything but constant. Wars continue. Division increases. Economies rise and fall. Headlines change by the hour. Many people are looking for someone or something in which to place their trust.
Where Do We Place Our Trust?
As believers, we are called to pray for our leaders, our nations, and the people around us. Scripture instructs us to do so. But prayer and trust are not the same thing. We pray for leaders, but we do not place our trust in them. We honor those in authority, but we do not look to them as our source of hope. We stay informed about what is happening in the world, but we do not allow the headlines to determine our peace.
Our trust belongs to the Lord alone.
One thing I have noticed over the years is how easy it is to place our hopes in people. We look to friends for understanding, family for support, leaders for wisdom, and loved ones for consistency. While these relationships are gifts from God, they were never meant to carry the weight of our deepest trust.
The truth is that people will disappoint us, not always because they intend to, but because they are human. People get tired. People make mistakes. People change. People fail. But God remains constant.
The God who was faithful to Abraham is faithful today. The God who delivered Israel from Egypt is faithful today. The God who fulfilled His promises through Yeshua is faithful today. He has not changed.
“Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man, in whom there is no help” (Psalm 146:3).
This does not mean we become cynical or disrespectful. Rather, it reminds us that no human being can carry the weight of our hope. No political party can save us. No government can provide the security that only God can give. No earthly leader can accomplish what belongs to the King of Kings. What comfort there is in knowing that while the world shifts beneath our feet, we stand on an unchanging foundation!
In a world filled with instability, we have something unshakable: the faithfulness of God. May we be people who pray faithfully, love boldly, and stand firm in our convictions. But above all, may we place our trust where it belongs—not in men, not in governments, not in circumstances, but in the Lord, who never changes and never fails. Trusting God is more than a feeling; it is a daily choice. It looks like opening His Word when fear tries to take hold of our hearts. It looks like praying before panicking. It looks like remembering His past faithfulness when the future feels uncertain. It looks like choosing peace over fear, faith over anxiety, and obedience over comfort. It looks like loving our neighbors even when the world is divided. It looks like extending grace when others choose anger. It looks like keeping our eyes fixed on God’s Kingdom when everything around us seems to be shaking. The headlines may change by the hour, but God’s truth remains the same. The opinions of men may shift, but God’s Word stands forever. The future may be unknown to us, but it is not unknown to Him.
Our Constant Must Come from God Alone
When I asked my husband, what the Hebrew equivalent of the word constant is, he replied, תמידי (tamidi). This adjective comes from the biblical Hebrew word תמיד (tamid), meaning “continually” or “continual.” It is often used in Scripture to describe things that were to be maintained continually before the Lord, such as the daily offerings, the Bread of the Presence, and the lamps of the Tabernacle.
Numbers 28:3 (NASB)
“And you shall say to them, ‘This is the offering by fire which you shall offer to the LORD: two male lambs one year old without defect as a continual burnt offering every day.’”
Exodus 25:30 (NASB)
“And you shall set the bread of the Presence on the table before Me continually.”
Exodus 27:20 (NASB)
“And you shall command the sons of Israel that they bring you clear oil of beaten olives for the light, to make a lamp burn continually.”
In several places, the psalmists also speak of God’s continual faithfulness, mercy, and truth that endure through all circumstances.
Psalm 40:11 (NASB)
“You, LORD, will not withhold Your compassion from me; Your mercy and Your truth will continually watch over me.”
As followers of Jesus, we were never promised a life free from trouble. In fact, Scripture tells us that difficult days will come. Yet we are also reminded that God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in times of trouble. So let us not be consumed by fear or distracted by the noise of this world. Let us be found faithful—praying, serving, loving, and trusting the One who sits on the throne. The world may feel increasingly uncertain, but for those who belong to the Lord, our confidence has never rested in the stability of the world. It rests in the unchanging character of God. When the world seems unstable, remember this: God is still constant. He is still faithful. He is still sovereign. He is still good. And He is still worthy of our trust.
Even in a changing world, the Lord calls His children to seek Him and trust Him continually. May we rise to this high calling and reflect the character of our Father.
Psalm 16:8 (NASB)
“I have set the LORD continually before me; Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”
Psalm 70:4 (NASB)
“May all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; And may those who love Your salvation say continually, ‘May God be exalted!’”
Psalm 71:14 (NASB)
“But as for me, I will wait continually, And will praise You yet more and more.”
Psalm 105:4 (NASB)
“Seek the LORD and His strength; Seek His face continually.”
“Where faith and hope meet”
